Brooklyn, NY - Maimonides Hospital Heart Doctor Second Worst In Malpractice.
Brooklyn, NY - A Brooklyn heart surgeon who got paid $1.2 million while racking up the state's second-worst death rate has been found guilty of medical malpractice in the 2001 death of a 70-year-old patient. A jury found that Dr. Israel Jacobowitz, the former SUNY Downstate Hospital chief of cardiothoracic surgery and the subject of a 2003 Post investigation, departed from "good and accepted standards of medical practice" when he tried a technique he wasn't credentialed to use, causing the death of patient Evangeline Johnson. But the March 21 Brooklyn Supreme Court verdict awarded Johnson's family just $56,000 after the judge ruled that jurors could not award damages for pain and suffering though Johnson suffered a brain injury during the surgery and lingered a week before expiring. The money was granted for funeral expenses and "loss of parental guidance." "The jury wanted to award pain and suffering, but the judge wouldn't allow it," said lawyer Marvin Fuhrman, who represented the family and who said he'd appeal. Jacobowitz continues to work a heavy caseload at Maimonides Hospital, which has even touted him in recent newspaper ads. He did not return a message seeking comment. Lately, I’ve been hearing scary stories about our local hospital. I’m referring to our ‘heimishe’ hospital "Maimonidies Medical Center" who receives the highest ratings in care, etc. from all those who rate hospitals (I know they pay a lot of money for these ratings).
I also listen to MMC ads where they pride themselves on being the very best, and having the best quality care. When I hear these ads, I get mad at myself for not doing something about it! We should be just the opposite! We should have the best care in the country without paying for false ratings! People think that they're doing a sick person a favor by getting him/her into a local, top rated hospital, just because it's run by heimishe people! WRONG! Why should a heimishe person take his close relative into a hospital that is run by heimishe people, and get a phone call that he is dead, when he went into the hospital for a minor surgery? Ok, mistakes could happen, and I thought I was a single unlucky person, the time came, hashem wanted back his neshama! But I told my friend this story and he told me an even scarier story! I was horrified! Since then I'm hearing stories all the time! A close relative of mine was in maimonides for a week getting treatment for an unknown problem! After a week he was transfered to a different hospital and was out in less than 24 hours! They took an x-ray, found the problem, treated it, and he was back on his feet in no time! I guess the hospital make more money if the patient is in the hospital for a longer time! The longer the better!
Isn't somone ignoring our problems and minding his money? Aren't we being laughed at? Don't we deserve better from our own comunity? How many people could have still been alive if we had not kept our stories a secret?

We know that there are hundreds if not thousands of horror stories "out there", why aren't "our people" speaking out. Telling your neighbors, friends and family doesn't count. If we really cared to make Maimo a better place we would be up in arms at all the "incidents" that occur there daily. maimonides hospital is the worst i have ever seen !!! the nurses ,they don't care about anything ! i was over the years with a couple of family members over night in the hospital its shocking to see how they just dont care they are nasty especally when you dont have a family member with you ... one night about 2 a.m. i was walking on the 6th floor when i heard someone calling for help i went in the room the guy hade a heart condition and was calling a nurse for 20 minutes no one came so i went to the nurse station to call a nurse but thier was no one there till i opened a door where a couple of nurses were TAKING A NAP (its not over yet ) so one nurse walked out with me , i gave her a piece of my mind she just agnored me and asked me if its my family member i told her yes she rolled her eye and went to the room .... i could tell 100 of stories that older people are scared to tell you when they are in the host. i learned that when its one of my family i bring donuts for those animals !!! just think about it 95 percent of people end up in a hospital in theyr life and if you live near maimonides you'll probely be suffering more then any other hostpital
