"Share Your Experiences of Your Stay At Maimonidies"

Lately, I’ve been hearing scary stories about our local hospital. I’m referring to our ‘heimishe’ hospital "Maimonidies Medical Center" who receives the highest ratings in care, etc. from all those who rate hospitals (I know they pay a lot of money for these ratings). I also listen to MMC ads where they pride themselves on being the very best, and having the best quality care. When I hear these ads, I get mad at myself for not doing something about it! We should be just the opposite! We should have the best care in the country without paying for false ratings! People think that they're doing a sick person a favor by getting him/her into a local, top rated hospital, just because it's run by heimishe people! WRONG! Why should a heimishe person take his close relative into a hospital that is run by heimishe people, and get a phone call that he is dead, when he went into the hospital for a minor surgery? Ok, mistakes could happen, and I thought I was a single unlucky person, the time came, hashem wanted back his neshama! But I told my friend this story and he told me an even scarier story! I was horrified! Since then I'm hearing stories all the time! A close relative of mine was in maimonides for a week getting treatment for an unknown problem! After a week he was transfered to a different hospital and was out in less than 24 hours! They took an x-ray, found the problem, treated it, and he was back on his feet in no time! I guess the hospital make more money if the patient is in the hospital for a longer time! The longer the better! Isn't somone ignoring our problems and minding his money? Aren't we being laughed at? Don't we deserve better from our own comunity? How many people could have still been alive if we had not kept our stories a secret? Anyone out there have any ‘wonderful’ stories or anyone interested in bringing a class-action suit? If you have any stories that you think would interest the public please feel free to add a coment!! You can't keep such stories to yourself and not do anything about it!!! P.S. Please e-mail me at shmo123@gmail.com so that I could respond to ur comment if needed. Note: All the posts are e-mails I got from people!

I echo your sentiments. I have two stories for you.

1. My grandfather was admitted to the Emergency Room. He was a Dialysis patient with severe issues. When we went to be with him we noticed our old neighbor in the bed next to him who was admitted for appendicitis. My mother went over to say hello and noticed my grandfather nametag on the bracelet of our neighbor. Our neighbor was 40 years younger than my grandfather and in pretty good shape. As my mom went to inform the doctor on call the nurses came to take our neighbor for dialysis treatment and were wondering where his shunt was. They were discussing having a new shunt attached to his chest...

2. My grandfather was in the last weeks of his life from his condition with kidney failure when a Dr. Mohammed found a lump to the left of his stomached. My grandfather said he had it there for 20 years; but the doctor would not believe him as he was sick. Dr. Mohammed wanted to do a biopsy to determine of the lump was cancerous. He approached my mother to sign a paper authorizing him to do this procedure. She asked Dr. Mohammed if the biopsy proved that the lump was cancerous, was he a candidate for treatment? He answered no. In that case, why the hell did he want to cut him up? Just for the fees. He proceeded to try to persuade my grandmother to sign (she did not know what he was talking about and was almost convinced). He did not let up even after I contacted Doug Jablon about this several times. It only ended when I assured Dr. Mohammed that he would not have any teeth left in his mouth after I was finished with him.

My aunt was a patient on Aaron 4 for 3 weeks. She claims the nurses washed once a week. Of course I had the patient rep come to take the report. We both went to the nurse in charge and she told us that my aunt was washed every day as it showed on the chart. All they do is write on the chart but they did NOT wash this poor woman.

My uncle was on K 7. The nurse walks in to take his vitals. She picked up the chart which is at the foot of the bed and wrote the same thing that was written the day before. His wife asked her....... What are you doing? You never even took his blood pressure, or checked his temp!!!! She told my aunt to mind her own business!!!!!! I called the head nurse Sandra Ollendorf, and she was shocked. Of course that nurse was reprimanded, but she's still there.

Mr G. was a patient in the ICU. he had water in his lungs and running high fever. They had no idea where the infection was. He was comatose for 4 days. THe family begged to have him checked out by a cardiologist. They refused saying its not his heart, its his lungs. They had him transferred to Mt Sinai by hatzola and there he was treated for heart failure. He is alive today if not for the transfer.

A young man was in ICU, he had a stroke. His Dr was Dr Rudolph. ( stroke specialist ) After a few days the patient ran high fever, no one knew where the infection was. Dr Kupfer is head of ICU. Dr Rudolph told him to give this patient another type of antibotics. Dr Kupfer said no. Meantime the patient was fading away! It was Pesach and Dr Kupfer was on vacation, so Dr Rudolph took the lab work to another laboratory ( of course nobody was supposed to know ) and had the infection diagnosed and treated without Dr Kupfer's permission. B'h the patient is much better. Dr Kupfer is a frum Dr but he thinks he is G-d. I have never met anyone who said a nice thing about him.

People have to wait sometime for days in the ER for a bed upstairs. The reason: No beds available. I checked many times and saw there are beds!!!!! The truth is, the insurance pays more per day in the ER then it does for a room. Like you say, it's all MONEY. A woman was brought in with a broken heel. They told her there are no beds and there are 16 people ahead of her. After calling the "right" people they gave her a bed the same night!!!!!! I thought there weren't beds!!! Nebech on those that have no protectzia.

I could go on and on and never stop. As long as you get the picture!

Brooklyn, NY - Maimonides Hospital Heart Doctor Second Worst In Malpractice.

Brooklyn, NY - A Brooklyn heart surgeon who got paid $1.2 million while racking up the state's second-worst death rate has been found guilty of medical malpractice in the 2001 death of a 70-year-old patient. A jury found that Dr. Israel Jacobowitz, the former SUNY Downstate Hospital chief of cardiothoracic surgery and the subject of a 2003 Post investigation, departed from "good and accepted standards of medical practice" when he tried a technique he wasn't credentialed to use, causing the death of patient Evangeline Johnson. But the March 21 Brooklyn Supreme Court verdict awarded Johnson's family just $56,000 after the judge ruled that jurors could not award damages for pain and suffering though Johnson suffered a brain injury during the surgery and lingered a week before expiring. The money was granted for funeral expenses and "loss of parental guidance." "The jury wanted to award pain and suffering, but the judge wouldn't allow it," said lawyer Marvin Fuhrman, who represented the family and who said he'd appeal. Jacobowitz continues to work a heavy caseload at Maimonides Hospital, which has even touted him in recent newspaper ads. He did not return a message seeking comment. Presenting Disease Transmission at MMC.
On the whole we are very grateful for hosting such a large comprehensive hospital serving our needs right in our community. Having said that, it must be realized that they need to stay on their toes and provide top notch quality care to safeguard our health.
My sister was getting her blood drawn in the labor and delivery unit when the resident dropped the needle on the (not so spic and span)floor. He proceeded to pick it up and wanted to inject it when my sister loudly protested.

My grandmother was there a long time, suffering of various little things, and sometime cause a bit of a pain-in-the-neck, but hey, its your job.
One day, it was visibly and obvious that her situation is becoming better by the minute, thanks to G-d, and now she was able to get the nurses to answer some questions, while two of her daughters were there and witnessed all...
A nurse comes in and asks the daughters to leave the room, while she needs to give care to patient... 2 minutes later, the nurse rushes out and shouting for help, my grandmother was put back on the respirator.
The story was that the nurse injected her with SOMETHING and my grandmother was put back on the respirator so she shall remain shut down longer, unable to talk. The daughters were horrified!
One day later she died... the respirator was unplugged, by mistake!

My Shver's neighbor, allergict to dairy and nuts products, but by mistake, she ate a food containing nuts. As a result, the reaction was there and the Hatzoloh of course, came on scene and drove her to Miamonidies. On friday.
On Shabbos, her status was becoming more stable, and seemingly closer to get home, while a nurse popped into the patients room and injected her, while the ingredients of the liquids of the injection contained milk like liquid...The women collapsed, her lungs collapsed, required surgery and now on a respirator...Terrible & Heartbreaking with 3 little kinderlach waiting for her to come home and cuddle them arround, Hashem Yerachem, may she heal quickly and live happily ever after!
